History of the Elizabeth Harvey Almshouses

Almshouse Charities governed by Trustees, who are usually appointed locally, trace their origins back over 1,000 years. They provide accommodation for those in need within a defined beneficiary group which is derived from the wishes of the benefactor.
The Harvey Cottages Charity owns five cottages at 47-55 Biggleswade Road, Upper Caldecote, SG18 9AH. The cottages were built in 1876 by Elizabeth Harvey, in memory of her brother and sister. They were built for poor widows and spinsters of the Parish.
Each cottage has 1 living room, a small kitchen and a small shower room downstairs and 1 bedroom with adjoining toilet upstairs. There is a large communal garden and an adjoining wood.
In 1956 the cottages were registered as a Charity to be administered by 5 Trustees. They are now available for “poor” single women and men with a connection to Northill Parish.
The objective of the Trustees as well as their responsibility is to provide the residents with a safe and pleasant environment in which to live. They are not responsible for the health and welfare of the residents and the cottages are not a warden-controlled establishment. The cottages are not suitable for disabled persons.
Trustees appoint new residents according to Charity Commission guidance.
